Trump’s Impact on Virginia

State Legislating In The Shadow Of A Trump Presidency

In the weeks that followed the election of Donald J. Trump, a number of state legislators around the country wondered aloud whether the new president was perhaps so enigmatic and unpredictable that he actually would not do what he promised to do during the course of the fall campaign. And others hoped that he might actually follow through on his promise that “all citizens will have really good health care.” They were dramatically wrong on all counts.  Trump has done exactly what he promised to do – with startling speed, audacious assertiveness, and with little apparent concern about the real impacts, not only of his tweets, but, more importantly, his policies. This presents significant peril for our constituents, but also unprecedented political opportunities for the upcoming elections. The first test electorally will be November 2017, and Virginia will be at the center of it all. All statewide offices are up for election, as well as 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates. Senator Creigh Deeds and Delegate David J. Toscano will hold a joint town hall meeting in Charlottesville to share insights from the 2017 General Assembly session and provide an opportunity to answer questions, receive comments, and listen to concerns from constituents.

Senator Creigh Deeds represents the 25th Senate District which includes the city of Charlottesville and part of Albemarle County. His district also includes the counties of Alleghany, Bath, Highland, Nelson, and Rockbridge and the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, and Lexington. In the Senate, Creigh serves on the Courts of Justice Committee, the Privileges and Elections Committee, and the Transportation Committee.

Delegate David Toscano represents the 57th House of Delegates District which includes the city of Charlottesville and part of Albemarle County. Delegate Toscano was first elected by his peers in 2011 as the House Democratic Leader. In the House of Delegates, David serves on the Courts of Justice Committee, the Rules Committee, and the Transportation Committee.

Budget Passage and Adjournment

On Saturday, February 25, 2017, we adjourned this year’s “short session” of the General Assembly with passage of a modified budget. The revised budget places total General Fund spending for FY2017 and FY2018 at $40.47 billion. [Read more…]

Washington Chaos, Redistricting, and Other Political Machinations

With Washington D.C. in chaos, the emerging opposition to the Trump Agenda is having an impact in Virginia. We are seeing more citizens come to the State Capitol to protest the conservative agenda and argue for values we consider important, such as increasing the minimum wage, creating greater economic opportunity for more Virginians, investing in public education, protecting Planned Parenthood, or bringing redistricting reform. Crossover and Budget

We’ve hit the mid-point of session, marked by what we call “crossover,” the day that all bills from one body cross over to the other in order to be considered. Many of the most heavily-contested bills arrive on this day, leading to long hours and fierce debates.

My primary focus continues to be passing legislation to help build the New Virginia Economy. That means pushing bills that spur job creation and that provide Virginians a much-needed raise. It also means supporting investments in education at all levels. We have made progress in some areas, but not in others. [Read more…]
